PASTIME EATING

I will be first to admit that sometimes I crave “snacking.” Not because I’m hungry, but because I WANT TO EAT. Besides the fact that I love food, sometimes when I’m stressed or bored, I will eat. Again, it’s not because I’m hungry, because I plan out my meals in advance, track macros and make sure I have a full nutrient-based meal every few hours. So when I “snack,” it tends to be out of boredom, and I know I’m not alone on this topic.

When you sit down to watch a movie, don’t you just feel like you have to snack? Or if you’re studying, you have to have something to munch on? (Boredom or stress-eating is one of the top factors that prevent people from losing or maintaining weight, and it CAN happen even if you’re eating healthy food!) If you don’t get this way, then I envy you. But if you do get this way, let’s go over a few tricks to prevent snacking.

EAT SMALL, WELL-BALANCED MEALS EVERY FEW HOURS.

Eating a nutrient-based meal every few hours helps your metabolism and keeps your energy level up, which in turn can keep your mind OFF of wanting to snack. Incorporate meals into your diet that consist of a complex carb (rice, potato, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, etc..), fibrous carb (veggies) and lean protein, and doing so every few hours is a great way to eat better and snack less!

DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

Water is the calorie-free, least-utilized and most amazing tactic for preventing pastime eating. Water fills you up, and makes you eat a little less. Drink a glass of water before a meal, or if you feel hungry and have recently eaten, grab some water. It will do wonders!

HAVE A HEALTHY SNACK ON HAND.

What do you tend to crave when you feel like snacking? Try some veggie sticks, have some homemade granola on hand (recipes are SUPER easy!), hard-boiled eggs, raw nuts or fruit. Grabbing a healthy snack isn’t a bad thing by any means, but if you really have to snack and your brain is telling you that you NEED to eat versus WANT to eat, a healthy snack is best! (Fuel your body with nutrient-rich calories instead of empty calories.)

I’m a caffeine-aholic. I do not function without caffeine. Never have (since college) and probably never will. I rely on caffeine, as do many others this day in age! Caffeine is my go-to “thing” when I’m hungry, because it’s mostly calorie-free and will give me an energy boost, which will get my mind off my next meal. IF I’m hungry, and I just ate, have no healthy snack on-hand, dragging or craving flavor, I grab some TeaMi. It quenches my thirst, crave for flavor & gets my energy level up naturally.
